Subject: Medicare Plan F & G compared to Plan F-HD & Plan G-HD

Thumb of Michigan

Everyone over the age of 65 on traditional Medicare can purchase what is often called Medi-gap policies. You need to register at Medicare.gov and can review policies (along with drug policies), that are available in your area. Open enrollment is now open, for changes, too. I'm staying with my current Plan D (drugs), which is unusual, but my total cost of drug co-pay & premium is less than $100 for the year. My wife takes more maintenance prescriptions, her total cost is under $110 for year. Unusual I say, because the insurance company has raised our premiums/co-pays a lot in the past, but not this year.

I always recommended that my clients, review this info annually, which could ease the retirement cash flow out-of-pocket. You will notice a vast difference in the cost for these policies from different companies on the Medicare site. Remember they have to have the SAME coverage within each Plan (so you are comparing apples to apples, per se).

The following info was taken from the Medicare.gov site, based on my zip code. If you are 65 (or getting close) hopefully you have registered and use the site to your benefit. The deductible savings happens over time, IF you are healthy and/or switch companies. I only did Plans F & G, because they are the most popular and are the only ones with HD plans. BTW, you can look at ALL the plans that are available, along with the names of the insurance companies offer coverage in your area, too.

I looked at Medi-gap policies, both Plan F and Plan G, along with Plan F-HD and Plan G-HD. Plan F & G are the only plans with the HD feature. The deductible for the HD (High Deductible) plans is $2,875 for the year. I used non-tobacco users only, age 69 female and male, along with age 75 for both ages. FYI, Plan F & Plan F-HD isn't available if you turned 65 on or after January 1, 2020. All are shown as monthly premiums ranges, (in my area).

Plan type Plan F Plan F-HD Plan G Plan G-HD
Female 69 $155-$548 $44-$133 $123-$441 $41-$126
Female 75 $188-$683 $53-$167 $156-$493 $49-$159

Male 69 $170-$631 $47-$148 $135-$498 $45-$140
Male 75 $206-$785 $58-$186 $172-$566 $54-$176

Hope this helps a few NAT folks.

Edit column line up, can't fix I guess
