There certainly are devious dealerships/mechanics.

About 1 year ago my daughter who travels much for her job and sometimes drove her own car for trips that were not too far had a breakdown hours from home.
I believe it was something quite simple .
So she had it towed and paid extra to haul it to a dealership since she was in an area she did not know rather than a closer no name garage.

Hauled in on a Wednesday evening and dealership could not look at it until Friday and then did not have parts or it fixed by Friday night.
Daughter has been stranded 3-4 hour drive from home but luckily another person working for the company was there too and heading to his home on route that took him close to her home so she got a ride near there and I picked her up to get home then delivered her back to that place for pickup to return to her car on Monday.

So this dealership had a long list of things that needed to be fixed on her car but she told them only fix what stopped her so she could drive safely home.

When she got back to her home she called her dealership to get car in and checked over and give it an oil change etc.

Home Dealership was not happy said only thing on other dealers list that needed replacing was a window wiper blade.
They then said no charge for the service they performed and said they would report the other dealership to head office of that brand.

Perhaps if they had not been dealing with someone who was used to negotiating with suppliers and dealing with problems in manufacturing the distant dealership could have stuck her with a big unnecessary bill
