Iowa | I have a love/hate relationship with 20’s. Weed control is better, but also has to be timely - if it’s wet you may end up fighting to get through. I agree with the poster about not much gain in good ground, but tremendous gain in poor ground - that has been my experience as well. I do not push my population as much as most in 20’s and I think that’s why my stand ability has been good. If you have lodged corn you can do a pretty good job with the head vs 30’s - provided stalks are dry and will slide on the head. Probably the biggest disadvantages are how quickly corn can close if you get a week of rain, and just the lack of popularity- harder to find equipment, tires spacing - stuff like that. If I get to spray with Jd highboy I run with rows, if I end up hiring it done the coop goes at an angle.
Narrow rows buffer from the extreme - so if the summer is hot, your gdus will be faster than 30’s, if it’s cool, you’ll accumulate slower. I work for Stine, so I’ve kinda seen the ins and outs of narrow rows for quite awhile before I made the switch 10 years ago. There’s a learning curve for sure, and don’t believe everything you read about cranking populations to 45+, it still comes down to hybrid selection and working with someone who knows your area.
