Eastern NE KS | We are similar, but only spring into fall, all falls were originally spring born. If a fall fails, that is strike 2 and she's out. Fall born heifers are never retained in the herd.
I like our compromise to university orthodoxy - 'any single problem she is out'. In my opinion, I can keep a cow 6 months more easily than develop a additional weanling heifer. And usually a now fall cow is 10-12 years old when she has strike 2. So this process seems to pay.
The fall group is very small, 10 is a lot, right now I have none. A bull does the pregnancy checking for the springs. Turn out at US Thanksgiving and pull him out Valentine's Day.
My vet prefers to work at his clinic. The fall group is hauled to the clinic for pregnancy check around April 1.
The fall born calves are a very small group and even smaller when cut by sex and weight at the sale barn. Sometimes the steer are grazed over the summer. Anyway my point is the falls are discounted due to head count. So from this perspective, the program is not perfect. | |
