Subject: OK let's talk heifer retention

Tablerock Ranch eastern Wa

I know most of you are pulling calves in right about now and weening or selling bawlers. We fall calve and have had last year's production on feed since June. It was ironic yesterday "with beef news" when #1 son and biz partner called with questions on numbers to breed, he was sorting heifers to breed with my Grandson, "what did we land on Dad" well crap! we must have talked 15 times on how many heifers to breed this year and I couldn't remember what we landed on so I did what old guys do with crappy memories... threw out the first number that made sense and waited for a reaction. He bit, not sure it was as many as he wanted as he has been pushing last couple years and I have been wanting to pull chips. So bottom line we kept little better than twenty percent, that is a big number for us compared to last few years, we have had dropping numbers with our cull rate and limited heifers held back. The 2 out of ten years being good profits has been lengthened in this last run that the Prez just threw a speed bump in front of, I figured after the profits leveled and fell off, we would get numbers back... can't wait any longer.

What are your plans?
