I know for a fact that they need to be drained out or they won't raise anything. my wife tests every load going in the bin for moisture and test weight. I haven't seen a yield monitor do that yet. the elevator that buys my grain will tell me exactly how many bushels I bring in, and if the monitor disagrees guess which weight they use. fun (crazy expensive) toy to look at, however.
While you can see the spot that you had trouble getting through with the planter, the yield monitor does show you just how big of an area is affected (its usually much bigger than what is easily visible) and to what degree it is affected.
Also, if you're a used combine buyer its unlikely that you're going to pay any extra to get one with a yield monitor and mapping capabilities. Most combines built in the last 20-25 years came from the factory with those "toys".
While that "toy" isn't necessary to farm, it has helped us do a better job at placing inputs where they will do the most good to potentially raise yields. I probably wouldn't spend $5-10k to add it to a 1660 or 9500 but I probably would discount a newer combine that for whatever reason lacked the ability to yield monitor and map.
