| Check and dump the opens asap. Keeping them is a trap, unless they are incredibly shelly and will gain weight to make a salable animal. The whole white fat market only works when the market is in an upswing. On a normal year or in a downturn; you burn a pile of time, money, and feed with the possibility one will be tits up one morning and put the project in the red. If you have enough extra feed to keep the drys, sell them and keep/buy replacement heifers or bred stock and give them the extra feed. At least they can give you a calf and better your herd. A dry cow is as useful as an 1100lb steer. | |
