Hi. Just wondering if anyone has found a excel or similar template to break down the financials of preg checking cows and shipping the opens in the fall as opposed to keeping them throughout the winter and having a very late calver or no calf at all. I`m not worried about the x dollars per head it costs to get the vet to come, I`m just trying to find a way to break down the numbers to show why preg checking is a good decision, and the feed savings from feeding open cows.
Thanks.
Too many unknowns is my first thought, unknowns/variables including these few:
What's your cost per cow, per day (some folks it might be <$1, others >$3 a day)?
Can you preg check yourself (there is still a cost)?
What does your vet charge to preg check (possible different rates, for everyone)?
What's your average conception rate (everyone is not the same, I think)?
Would two calving periods work in your situation (spring and fall calving)?
Would you have a higher conception rate, with a longer bull exposure time or cows in better condition before breeding period?
What hourly rate do you charge yourself for YOUR time (yes, there should be a cost to that IMHO)?
