Why? I save back replacement heifers every year regardless of who’s in office or what the market is doing. Lack of available land to run cattle on killed heifer retention here long before high markets. I really think if you added another 1k a head on steers very little land would be fenced off and seeded down in my neighborhood. I realize things are probably different everywhere else.


The high prices and cheap hay are causing more herd dispersion here than a few years ago when hay was 3X the money and calves were half.

I think it would take a lot of farmers going bankrupt before any fence gets put up.
