peteh057 - 10/16/2025 22:00 My wifes father is a phenomenal cow man. His claim that fat heifers make poorer cows (mammas) has generally been accurate when I keep a soggy one. Their calves don't weigh up as well at weaning for me. I think it may have something to do with HOW and WHY the heifers get fat. From what I've seen, external fat from silage and feed is very different than intramuscular fat from grass and genetics. My cows have been described as "too fat" for years. This is the result of being on good grass and hay plus several generations of using high marbling EPD bulls. They get almost nothing but grass. Yet they make good mommas and most calves weigh up well. |
