Virginia, Northern Neck | That is the best way, no doubt, but as you say, propane could be a hazard.
Old-timers around here used truck exhaust for rodent extermination, no explosive gases, just some hot tubing to handle.
Edited to add: I was taught to repair vehicle fuel tanks by purging them with exhaust gas and brazing them.
The man who taught me to purge with exhaust gas used to light the oxy/acetylene torch by moving it close to the lit cigar stub that was always in his mouth.
Not recommending any of that today, my teacher died of old age at 95, just 2 years ago.
Looks like the cigars and playing with fire did not shorten his life.
