Subject: Interesting Question.

Western Ohio
We are trying to simply keep our numbers flat and not let things slide one way or the other. The comment above about "set on cruise control and proceeding cautiously" would apply to me as well.

It is fun no doubt to finally sell some calves profitably. Last year was nice but for most Spring calving herds you are just now getting to the point where you are selling some high-priced animals. Many are asking about rebuilding the herd across social media and in various meetings. The best line I heard was "Let these guys be profitable for a year or 2 and they will rebuild."

The lesson I learned in the past 12 months is you have to hang on to what you are getting rid of until you have your replacement plan in place. Like others in this post, we have sold all our calves the past few years and will again this year. What is beating many of us up myself included if you sold your calves last fall but did not buy your replacements until this Spring there was a real bath to be taken as cows had gone up significantly in that period of time. My encouragement is to not sell what you are getting rid of until you have your replacements in place and you know the cost of them.

Going to watch replacements sell tonight at a local replacement sale I go to every year. We will be watching fall heifer pairs sell tonight. Calves will be 1-2 months old and it should be fun to watch. We will be interested in the Spring calving cows in this auction that will calve next April.
