I put the horse before the cart. I expanded my hay and pasture acres before scaling up my herd. Turns out I did things a bit backwards. Now I’m running about half the number of cows I need to make full use of my forage. Last two years I sold all calves and culled hard last year. Paid off a farm in two calf crops!

My plan is to retain my best heifers and purchase additional replacements vs buying bred cows/heifers. A couple of my neighbors sell all their calves and then buy back replacements, so I’m planning to buy some of those calves. I’ll keep them separate for a few months to manage health and transition.

I could try and sell hay (Need a drought to move it all) and wait for cattle to come back from the moon....

Any thoughts or input welcome.

Still trying to figure out why you would want to do it the other way around? Having more animals than feed. That seems backwards to me. Easy to get more animals if you have the feed.
