NW MN | I put the horse before the cart. I expanded my hay and pasture acres before scaling up my herd. Turns out I did things a bit backwards. Now I’m running about half the number of cows I need to make full use of my forage. Last two years I sold all calves and culled hard last year. Paid off a farm in two calf crops!
My plan is to retain my best heifers and purchase additional replacements vs buying bred cows/heifers. A couple of my neighbors sell all their calves and then buy back replacements, so I’m planning to buy some of those calves. I’ll keep them separate for a few months to manage health and transition.
I could try and sell hay (Need a drought to move it all) and wait for cattle to come back from the moon....
Any thoughts or input welcome. | |
