Subject: RE: Sugar beets in Minnesota

Bow Island, Alberta
I'm in southern Alberta, where sugar beets grown under irrigation, so some of the practices would be similar.

1. Harvest here goes 24 hours per day, and growers harvest in 12 hour shifts. So during harvest, only half the fields in an area might have activity.
2. Sometimes harvest is shut down if its too cold or too warm.
3. The tops have no sugar in them, so they are removed to make processing more efficient.
4. Good yield here is over 35 tonnes/ac. Some fields are around 40 tonnes (44 tons)
5. Here the large piles are all hauled to the processing factory over the winter. They usually finish in February.
