I guess what I’m asking is what would you do in this situation if you were the boss and how can I explain this to my dad without it turning into a argument because I’ve started to just not say anything anymore cause it always turns into arguement with him.

I am the boss and still regularly stop at decent hours, even when a "situation" is looming. When I was young and starting out with my dad we would push hard. Regularly run 12 hour days. Now that I'm older and have a family I see there are much greater priorities in life. I think my dad pushed so hard not because it was important for the farm but being together was important.

My point being, and now with hind sight, rarely does pushing "extra hard" really make THAT big of a difference. Let's say you push an extra 2-3 hours into dark each night before its to tough. You are only gaining 5-ish hours of combine time before Tuesday's bad weather. Realistically thats probably 30-50 acres "extra" you got. Thats a coupe truck loads of beans totaling maybe $20K. Even if the weather turns bad and you take a whopping $.25 per bushel hit (which they would have to be way light and way wet) thats only a $5k loss.

I'm not saying that's nothing, but what I will say is IF the weather goes bad, and IF you stay late and manage to get acres harvested, and IF the discount is extreme, MAYBE you will save $5k dollar. Vs. you HAVE pissed off your dad (and probably mom), based on your post you HAVE created a situation where everything turns into a argument, and you are LIKELY making it very difficult if even impossible for your parents farm to transition to you in a timely or happy manor. All over a relatively minor amount of money.

I'm not saying your are right or wrong trying to push late. I'm just saying you should really consider the total net grain or loss of your situation and decide if its a hill worth dying on.

I understand where you are coming from. My mom doesn’t have a problem running later and I have actually learned to not say anything to my dad if it’s going to start an arguement actually. So I kinda just keep to myself. I used to not be like that but I have grown up a little. Every penny matters in farming in today’s markets. But that’s just my opinion
