East of Broken Bow | I was talking to a guy at the fair a few years back, what we did for a living came up, he asked me what I did and some aspects of it, and I asked him the same.
Turns out he was a counselor, and when I asked him what the worst part of counseling was, he said seeing people get consumed by their vices (or demons or whatever you want to call it). Said that over and over again, things like alcohol, drugs, gambling, etc get such a hold on people it takes over their lives, and there are some who are willing to risk evrerything they have for it. The more I think about it, the more I think he was right. If you look around at where lots of money flows, it is generally into things that do more harm than good. I can think of people who could have bought a new Cadillac every 3-4 years for what they spent on cigarettes, people who's lives are more or less wasted because all they want is another drug fix or another drink. I think gambling and even gaming can fall into those categories as well. It is like self-destructive behavior is built into us, and we have to fight it or it can take over. | |
