Eastern NE KS | I rationalize that detail in my head.
A breed leader in stayability will probably have more 10-12 yo progeny in the herd than one that is poor on the stay scale. Said another way, the 6 year detail is not a 'she made it past the litmus test' but creates a mathematical process to judge the differences in blood lines.
This year I have 2 12 yo cows. Each calved in the middle of the season. Each cow raised 11 calves. One had a good looking bull that will be developed for neighbors. The other was a dink, pot belly heifer. Both cows were fertile last year but one quit milking and weaned her calf probably soon after its birth.. She will see wheels under her.
The stay and functional longevity epd condenses this story and many other like it into a number on a spectrum. The number and epd system in itself is not good or bad. It's simply a data point that allows a prospect to be compared to another prospect. Or in my case, allow me to judge if an individual is better than breed average or not in this massive number of stories that I have no access to learn.
However, how much power or influence I give that singular number is a whole 'nother discussion. And it starts with the fact that I have 25 of those numbers, plus all the traditional parameters that help to define "I like bull A over B because ...."
