I posted here close to ten years ago with the same thing. Dekalb number. About 40% of the ear popped off. Happened in an irrigated field.
There were no signs of disease or mechanical injury. The yield was very good. I reasoned that the cob had tried to shrink beyond what the kernels would allow. Tension built up in the cob until it failed. Affected maybe 2 or 3 percent of ears.
