It is tied to one genetic family. I think it occurs when the cob is drying. Seems to be associated with very high yield. Usually more in the outside row, gaps and highest yielding areas of the field.
Hardly ever a financial issue just cosmetic as typically the hybrid will be one of your highest yielding. Maybe 1 % of yield loss.
