| Well in my world Stayability is defined as she's not a fence jumper, not a man eater. She can rough it on desert to high mountain pastures. She knows the range she trailed from birth with momma; she's got the homing gene bred into her. She can get bred up and bring a 450 wt. to 600 wt. calf on her side depending on feed availability and pasture capability. We bred the horns off a long time ago, plus the bad eyes. We dealt with one cancer eye last week; she was a black bally cow. So there goes the Black Herfords. LOL had to rib ICC on that one.
We buy a big selection of bulls; all seem to work for us. Not had feet problems for 40 years. Some temperament issues over the years. However most good breeders in this area have worked on that, a lot of it is in their handling of them raising them. if I can get 4 years out of a bull the breeder did his job, and the luck of the draw the bull didn't get hurt. I never thought I needed to worry about insurance on bulls. I'm sure glad I did this year. It hurts to have a 45-day purchase tip over on you and still got 3-5 months to breeding time. I used to just buy extra bulls and self-insure. That game has changed for us. | |
