You mentioned rain....We have a farm in the river bottoms on some black gumbo that is pattern tiled. We also have a pivot that sits on the line between the gumbo and a sand field. Had 3 big rains June and July, then virtually nothing in August and Sept with hot temps. Beans had their tongues hanging out and big cracks in the ground. We ran the pivot heavily on the sand and only 3 times on the gumbo at .4" each time. The irrigated gumbo was about 10 bu less than the corners. Obviously lack of water wasn't a yield limiting factor, but surprised the light amount of irrigation in that dry, hot period hurt yield. Had similar results another time but thought this year was "different". LOL We've decided the pivot is no longer allowed on the gumbo except for 2012 type droughts or to put UAN on at tassel.
