Judaism in the Bible (Old Testament) speaks of life being at first breath, and hence the faith doesn't have the moral stance of say the Catholic faith of life at conception in regard to abortion. While no major religion encourages abortion, some faiths place more emphasis on the mother versus the fetus. This creates a lot of the tension in the abortion debate of this country. The black and white stance that some take in regard to abortion does not correlate with teaching of other major religions, which our country was principally founded on... freedom of religion (choice).

It is an unwinnable argument, but it has "cleverly" created a "we/they" political debate. It is a wedge issue that some will never accept regardless of how good/bad other policy stances are and because an "automatic" win for one side or the other. We see it all the time on this site. We have people that willingly disregard policy that would "potentially" improve their lives because of this one issue. I am not saying it isn't important either, but because we have freedom of religion (our country) and free will (given to us from God), we feel that we have to take a stance, politically. When we pass, we will have to atone for our decisions, and some feel that not taking a political stance on abortion will not get them to heaven, while others take the position of it's between "me and my Creator" and the government is to be designed for all (even the non-believers).

The point being, it's an argument you will never fully solve and will continue to divide us as a country.
