Maybe, maybe not. It takes a certain amount of man-hours to harvest an acre, no matter what kind of equipment you have. So you hire a trucker and speed up your harvest time by double. But you now have 2 people working at it. Is that considered more efficient? Or you buy a bigger combine, but now have to hire 2 trucks. Yeah, the combine might sit alot, but I'm not sure bigger equipment and more people is always more efficient. Think about how many acres you need to support your one man show, and how many more acres you would need to support the employees you need to operate at "maximum efficiency." In my area, harvest (especially fall) usually has ample time, we don't get too much rain in fall and winter doesnt start early. But still there are alot of X9's and quad trac grain cart tractors that sit in the shed 11 months out of the year. And lots of people that run themselves into the ground trying to custom farm, just so they can afford that equipment.
