North Central Indiana | Cattle guys work harder than any other industry in America… at convincing everyone else how hard they work that is!
Newsflash, cattle isn’t a bad gig. We aren’t big time by any stretch but we run 120 pairs split between 2 locations. They’re on pasture almost 8 full months most years, with a supplemental bale or grain occasionally as needed. So we feed for 4 months, and they aren’t in the busy season. Making hay in the summer isn’t a bad job, we never have enough hay to make, not because we need more but because every single person in the extended family wants to help mow, rake, bale, or pick up bales. We put everything we’re finishing out on a little feedlot we have for 6-8 weeks and they get fed daily but we rigged up old hog feed bins and an auto feeder for them so it just gets checked. Water is all automatic. Aside from animal health and calving there just isn’t that much work in cattle.
Big time farmer that we’re friends with bought a bunch of acres 30 miles from his home farm to run cattle on for fun, couldn’t have them at home because his land is “too good to put cattle on.” Now he’s got a couple hundred acre cattle hobby for fun. Must not be such a bad gig after all | |
