If payments were limited to the first economically viable acreage it might make some sense. If you want to grow more, knock yourself out but it will be at market value. Now crop insurance, well that is a different animal. There should be less incentive for geographic diversity though. I understand there is less risk but the idea is to keep the average farmer in business from year to year.
