If it's a ford like mine (99 PSD) you go through the standard steps:
1. change fluid and screen - maybe good for 500 or 5000 miles
2. try transmedic or similar - probably less than 1000 mi to go before no go
3. add brake fluid - gets you home and a few quick trips

Any pulling during steps 1-3 will shorten the mileage to failure, maybe dramatically.

There are many trans shops and I had mine done by a guy in kankakee (shiftrite) - his price is $800 or $1500 if he pulls the trans.
