Subject: RE: Jd 6620 picking corn question

Coles County, Illinois
I'm with the "Pull the lever when full and look at the straw walker cobs." approach to setting opening. I run in the 350-400 rpm range. Do not go by 9000 series recommendations on cylinder speed as the cylinder is 25% larger in diameter so they should run a slower speed. Ideally one should be a wide and as slow as possible to get all the full kernels off the cob. If you have nubbins then one has to make a value judgement as to how much damage to the cobs to get them off. Another issue is spongy cobs where compromise may be necessary. Fan speed is 800 and front chafer set around 9/16" The back section 3/4". Sieve 1/2". With this setup I run 1300 bu/hr. This rate is while actually running in the field so a speed X width X yield calculation and fairly dry corn.
