Subject: RE: Looking for ideas

MB, Canada
I've also had the idea of using smaller rounds left in place to bale graze. There's a guy here in MB who did that to some success I think.

The "there's no wasted hay" argument is fine until you are A: On the edge of having enough feed, or B: Need to cut feed on that field the next spring. If I was feeding out on some pasture and had 20% more feed than I needed then I wouldn't be too concerned.

I've heard of folks opening up the row by driving on it. One of my favorite solutions was to put a few horses in with the cows as they're better at opening up the row to let the cows in. Using horses to actually reduce feed waste feels like an ironic concept.

Couldn't find the thread on new balers but I can imagine what was likely said. I've never bought into the argument proposed by the anti-equipment folks. I've been told many times that if you own any amount of equipment the depreciation will ruin you but I've yet to pay more than $16k for a tractor. I run a newer baler because when I have $50k worth of hay rowed I want to make sure I'm going to get it up, but the reality is that there are loads of older balers out there for $40k that will bale just fine. I've come to the conclusion that most of the anti-equipment people are just terrible operators/mechanics who want to justify not getting better at it. Same as all the folks who make excuses as to why they can't set up a decent grazing program when the real reason they won't do it is because they feel insecure about being terrible at something for a little while.

Maybe I'll hedge my bets and grow something like forage oats or barley that I can silage bale and then follow it with millet for swath grazing.
