When you try and connect with AgRemote, have you got it set on a specific baud rate, or is it set on AutoSelect? In Auto mode (like it says in that warning message) it will try all of the possible baud rates until it finds one that works, whereas a specific baud rate selection will mean it only tries at that baud rate, and no others. I would also try uninstalling and re-installing the USB to Serial adapter in the Device Manager menu on the computer. You may have also broken a solder trace on one of the TX/Rx pins if the unit was dropped hard enough onto the ground
