So the hot topic in our industry right now is the rebuilding of the US cow herd. I keep hearing about, possible heifer retention and so fourth. Here's my question, where are we physically going to put all these retained heifers if a rebuild does happen? Is there somewhere in the US with abundant pasture with good fence and water that is currently sitting empty? Its not here in the Midwest, good pasture got torn up for 7 dollar corn, fences are long gone, hell the current fences are half junk, and of all the younger farmers around here, I can think or about 3 that are interested in running cows. Whats everybody's thoughts.
I do not know about places outside the midwest but I guarantee that grain farmers in the Midwest will go broke before ever having a hoof on the farm again. If these prices aren't pulling marginal midwset geound back into pasture, not much will. |
