Here is a 14-year-old NAT thread on Versatile axle tube failures and fixes. However, it is so old that much of the information is no longer accurate.
The 555 was not a very popular Versatile, which may also be a factor. At one time, there were a couple of places making steel replacement axle tubes for Versatiles.
GC parts in Alberta might be a good place to check. Good luck.

You are also talking about the wrong kind of axle. 555 has bar axles with inboard planetaries unlike most Versatile with outboard planetaries.

I could swing by the local Versatile dealer at the end of the day and see if there are any appropriate axles lying in the outdoor parts area. They used to have quite a bit of stuff that they acquired from Versatile in Wpg.
