Is it possible to use the resume switch in the console to engage a 750 Trimble monitor? If so, how does an average not so mechanic go about it ? John Deere 8120
I assume your question pertains to engaging a Trimble and most other brands of auto or assisted steering systems rather than using the screen icon. I have a Trimble 750 with a Nav II in an older STX-450. A common door bell type switch is used there to engage the steering.
If your question refers to using a switch to start/stop a coverage map that is possible but let's save that for another day.
The Deere resume switch is designed to work with the Deere steering system. It is not just a simple switch. Although it might be possible my advice is do not attempt to use it to engage the Trimble steering. If you remove the switch and attempt to replace it with another, the tractor will likely complain. My advice is to purchase a separate switch and use it. Leave the Deere switch alone.
The separate switch needs to be a two terminal momentary like a door bell switch. When the button is pushed the circuit is complete. When released an internal spring pushes the button back up and breaks the circuit. Various suppliers have this switch in a rocker style that will fit an unused blank in the Deere Command Arm. That is how I wired my 8120.
We also have an older 8310 but it did not have any unused blanks in the Command Arm. For that tractor I mounted the switch in a small plastic box and attached it to the outside of the Command Arm with some double faced tape.
The Trimble system will require that you push and hold the button momentarily and then release the button to engage the steering. The button must be pushed and held for a bit before releasing. If you do this too fast the system does not engage. This is for safety, so accidentally brushing the switch or laying something over it doesn't engage the steering.
