I am not so sure you are correcct. There are lots of ways that solar/wind will pay. It is called advertising or going green.
It’s HEAVILY subsidized and very dependent on those subsidies.
And it needs 100% redundancy (aka backup generation) to keep the power on. That redundancy is not cheap but no fear for the power companies, the tax payers and energy customers are paying for it.
