Say you’re in a room full of non-farmers, what is your argument to justify direct payments to farmers? This would be excluding CRP, CSP or EQIP type program dollars.
I’m not arguing for or against, I cash the check just like everybody else. I do have a few self imposed rules on what I will or will not use that money for. No new Duramax, no improvements at the lake home and no new iron.
John I think we are lucky on payment side that few know what $$ farmers have. Really hard to justify payments when small business in town goes broke with no gov't $$.
In Ontario with Supply Mangement for dairy & feather the Quota alone is millions. Visiting with Dr. friends from london and his wife says " our friends milking cows work so hard and its s truggle keeping there farm going" ... I said I agree, hardest working farmers. But you do know there milk quota is worth $10 mil.+...They had no idea
I believe crop ins., RMP or other programs we pay fees too are acceptable....its the ad hoc payments that are hard to explain.....and no $100k pkps. or mil. $ combines here either..Hard to grow a farm bigger today with land prices and rents...Even concrete is 10X higher than when we started building..But we are all healthy ,housed and well fed |
