| Lack of a social life and not being able to experience things outside of the farm has just as much to do with the declining number of farms with cattle (or livestock in general) as the chronic poor returns. I know it can be taken to the extreme with the million dollar lake houses and all the toys that go with them, but there's nothing wrong with taking a week long vacation in the summer or winter or both, and taking time to go on short weekend trips throughout the year. And if you're young, dating can be a tough gig, especially in the winter with chores and calving every day.
Edit to add: Weather can also play a role in wanting to get out of livestock. Common thing i hear is not having to worry about feeding in calving in blizzards.
