The worst time to enter anything is at the high. Anything in agriculture is a lifetime commitment. You can't just be in cattle one year and out the next, then back in etc...Most guys own enough land, and have enough built up working capital that they'll weather this downturn just fine like other downturns. The big will continue to get bigger as boomers retire and pass on. Investors are not going to let productive farmland go back into pasture unless the cattlemen out there want to pay big rent like the grain guys. Not many young men or women are going to move out in the middle of nowhere where there is little social life, entertainment, healthcare, romance, travel, and other amenities like there are in the city. I wish that there wasn't monopoly on the input side of ag and on the processor side of ag. If that was addressed, and you could diversify into more than just cattle, corn, and soy that would be a big help. But that is unrealistic. Billionaires are not going to let go of power, they could care less as long as they are making good money on their investments. Your heart is in the right place, but I'm afraid vertical integration and specialization has dominated the industry to a point where we're not going back. It would take a cataclysmic event, like a world war, disease, great depression, etc. before there would even be a hint of a chance of ag going back to large scale diversification like it is was long ago. Don't forget technology either! AI is going to change every industry including agriculture to the point it'll be unrecognizable to us, just like today's agriculture would be unrecognizable to your great grandfather. Everyone just needs to keep their chin up and adapt the best you can. It's all we can do.
