| Some years ago I sold 22 yearling bulls in one whack to a guy who traded a CO mountain ranch (elk hunters using 1031 money) for a four hundred cow ranch in the NE Sandhills WITH THE COWS. He was driving a road grader to make a living before the swap. He said he was breaking some rule or another every day he had is cows on his grazing permits. Quite the lucrative deal. I had a young guy working for me one time who grew up on a mountain ranch. He said his first job out of high school was fixing fence for a grazing association with federal permits. Started in the spring when there was snow still on the ground and quit when the snow got too deep. I think he had another guy with him. All with saddle and pack horses. He could fix fence as well as anyone I've ever come across. How about having to put a ten foot fence around your hay stacks to keep the elk out. Met another guy who was getting sued because he caught the guy that was shutting off his water tanks and leaving gates open on the highway of his BLM permit. Pulled his truck across the road and called the sheriff, now was being used by the guys wife for kidnapping or something or another. | |
