Half a mile down the road from me is a silo that was built in the '70s because cattle were so profitable, it was filled one time before the cattle all got sold.
I am not trying to be a smart aleck but in the late 70's and beyond the state of Wisconsin had thousands of silos that were filled once or a few times and never again. Not because they were a bad decision but 20% interest on silos, big tractors, choppers and wagons killed the farm. The entire setup cost more than the farm was worth by the 80's.
Hard to believe but most of those dairy farms would have survived with poorer quality baled hay and no payments. There were no interest free government loans for the new setup and their goose was cooked. |
