Hastings, Florida | I was chief for years of a volunteer station, covered a small town, Interstate, and about 80 square miles. Averaged about 10 calls a week, rescue mostly. All members paid per call by County,
At night , had 2 members on call from home, rotated it out between about a dozen qualified . Allowed to pick their weeks, and partner by seniority. If pager went off, they had to respond, no matter how trivial the call. Other members could respond, their choice. Those 2 could request more manpower, and if it sounded serious, we all knew to go.
These 2 were also responsible to make sure they, or someone to take their place ( by mutual agreement) , were able to respond all weekend, stayed close around to answer calls. | |
