Subject: RE: 3 point hitch backnhoe

Kingston,Mi
3 point backhoes are sloppy, by that I mean all 3 attachment points to the tractor have excessive clearance designed into the balls on the ends of the lower links plus the center link. Each movement of the hoe results in first the clearance being taken up then productive movement (somewhat), then when the load is dumped, more useless movement before work is done.

As a Soil Conservation Tech. I was involved in installing erosion control devices and at 1 farm the owners decided that they could install it themselves if I provide assistance with my survey equipment. They had a Long or Woods 3 point backhoe on a 4020 John Deere, every loose movement was amplified by the time it reached the end of the bucket. So even had every pin on the backhoe been factory tight, the result was similar to expecting smooth movement from a 1/2 inch pin in a 1 inch clevis on a hydraulic cylinder, it will work, just not well.

As to being better than a shovel, this job would have been at least as fast had the younger partners 2 teenage sons wielded a couple of round point shovels.
