SLC - 9/25/2025 19:08 Over leveraged and poorly run?? What about beginning farmers who don’t have daddy’s equity as a backstop? Let them fail and go to work for the BTO who is the only one able to afford to keep going? How do we want the future of agriculture to be structured??

I hate to tell you this but anyone trying to get into farming that doesn't have family backing is facing a monumental up hill battle and is likely to fail, even with govt subsidies, which just get bid into inflated land prices by existing operations anyway and is a entry barrier for new farmers.

The only way anyone without family backing is going to get their feet under them is if a retiring farmer takes them under their wing, meaning renting them land for less than going market rent or even more beneficial for a beginning farmer, share cropping.

If you're a farmer nearing retirement and you want to see someone young get started farming, you can help make that happen.   Sadly, most retiring farmers are only concerned about how much rent they can collect from the neighborhood BTO.
