Capitalism and free markets in Ag went out the door with the Carter embargo 45 years ago. Yea, I still remember that. Markets were closed 2-3 days then limited down for 3 days. Thank you very much Jimmy and the US Government. That was the turning point when we were no longer considered a stable supplier and other countries began their long term quest of finding a stable supply. Mainly China looking at beans in Brazil for one example. Brazil tore out the rain forests to grow beans and be a stable supplier to China.
You must be an old fart like me. That period of time is hard to forget. It changed completely how I run this business and how I've made purchasing decisions. However, look on the bright side. Remembering that time (well), probably set guys up like you and I to weather this storm. We aren't close to that misery yet so I guess that's a good thing. I think the real pain will be next fall. |
