SW Ohio | Seed more specifically at this time.
Co-op I've been pretty loyal to came by the other day and mentioned beans would be same as last year (Which I think I've heard before and they went up), and corn would be up a few bucks. It really upset me that with the commodity prices what they are that they really feel the need to raise seed prices again. Both were up a decent bit last year, and I don't have 2023 prices in front of me, but I'm sure they've been on a climb for awhile.
Don't get me wrong, I'm not complaining about the co-op. They service me well and have a lot of good people. I'm reasonably certain this is coming from the seed brand and not the co-op.
So last spring I needed a couple boxes of beans to finish, wound up calling a competing large ag retailer and bought them to try. Seems like a nice guy and was quick to service. Physically within 4 miles the same distance from the farm, just in opposite direction. He offered corn for $35/unit less than last year's price as a new customer. 2027 I think he would be similar pricing to co-op. He has a deal on beans but its not nearly as attractive.
How does a guy not take advantage of a situation like that? And its not like I'm talking about 6 bags, but I'm no huge customer either. 150 bags give or take of corn. There is a lot of comfort in using the same brand year after year if it works and keeps you farming. I'm not one to jump around a lot on corn. I've planted quite a few different beans in recent years, but who knows how many crossed over the same variety in a different bag.
I fully realize I can't save myself into a profit, and cheap seed can be the most expensive seed you plant. I also don't think its fair that my input cost keeps climbing in an economy that doesn't support it. I wish I had the revenue to support paying double what I do now! I think its time I made a statement and voted with my wallet. I do have some corn plots out that will come off in the next few weeks that will help make my decision. Oh and to further muddy the water, Golden harvest comes around last week talking prices that are cheaper yet! Problem is syngenta corn does not usually perform well in this territory. I'm starting to think beans are just beans though and it doesn't matter much who sells them anymore | |
