NW Missouri | If you're just here to complain, that's fine. I also have farms with zero base acres. One used to be grass, but the other was farmed during the right years, but when that piece was sold off, the old owner moved that base to a different farm first.
If you want to know why it actually is that way, they did it as a loophole in the WTO rules, because they aren't supposed to directly subsidize ag production. When they pay on base, they aren't paying on what was planted that year, so it doesn't throw up red flags evidently. I agree it's stupid, and it takes so long afterwards to get a payment that anyone who truly needed it would be out of business long before they got their ARC money anyway, but that's where base acres came from.
It does sound like if we ever get a new farm bill there may be some updates to them. | |
