Metals like aluminum and manganese can become toxic at pH levels in the 4 range. Soil pH can change throughout the season with soil moisture and this can cause the difference you saw in planting dates.

You need the lime definitely on the soil test with 60% base saturation hydrogen. That's Ludacris.
