Step-by-Step Guide
1. First Wash (Degreaser + Baking Soda)
Pour a small amount of heavy-duty dish soap, like Dawn Platinum, and a tablespoon of baking soda into the washing machine.
Run an empty cycle using the hottest water and strongest agitation settings available. This helps to remove any oil and grease residue from the fuel.
2. Second Wash (Degreasing Cleaner)
After the first cycle, run another empty load using a powerful degreaser. Options include:
A general-purpose degreaser such as Simple Green
A mechanic's degreasing hand wash (if you have a suitable product on hand).
Again, use hot water and a normal or heavy-duty cycle.
3. Third Wash (Vinegar Rinse)
Run a final, empty cycle using one cup of white vinegar.
This step is crucial for neutralizing any residual diesel odor and ensuring the degreaser is thoroughly rinsed from the machine.
4. Final Steps
Do not dry the machine: until you are sure the smell is gone.
If the smell persists, you may need to repeat the vinegar rinse or consider using a solution like Pine-Sol or Lestoil in a wash cycle.
Important: Make sure to wash any diesel-soaked clothes separately with a strong degreaser and hot water to prevent repeated contamination of your entire laundry load. | |
