North Central Illinois | I just use my actual hands for a few ears, but a channel lock pliers works ok. Can really speed it up with a lag bolt in the chick of a cordless drill.
Set the pliers for just a hair bigger than the cob diameter and spin the ear through it on top of a 5 gallon bucket.
Here's a video of a guy doing similar, though he made a ring that is suspended in the bucket instead of the pliers.
