coast of Maine
Prattski, rough world in the specialty crop world.Less and less control from the producer/grower to more and more control by the few and fewer buyers. If ol Walmart is buying it in for 25 cents ,,it will be a few seconds before the buyers from any other chain want it for a max of 26 cents. The only great money made is when another production area gets screwed by the weather. This causes a bit of demand increase. It only takes a tiny bit of over supply(as in a few semiloads)that makes the phone/computer light up at the buyers desk,,then the price slides off the cliff.Figure on producing as cheap as the next guy(does not work on imports as their labor rates are often 1 $ Hr)and trusting a buyer/broker.I have never shipped thru a broker so I do not know how much they can screw you for.Build a brand, sell locally if you can.We built a local brand, the only area we can make any real profit is with this local brand,Beths.Wholesale 40 years ago is a way different animal than now.The places you could call were in the dozens, now maybe 6 major buyers in the NE.They sure as heck do not talk to a peon like me.
