SE IL and SW IN | The Dr asks this question and others to help gauge the commitment of the patient to successfully complete the treatment protocol and to help the patient to make an informed decision. My oncologist showed me research suggesting that nearly 75% of treatment failures can be attributed to events that could be mitigated by a rigorous regimen of healthy nutrient consumption and exercise with a dogged commitment to get through to the next treatment.
Two cases that I have been close to: A young lady while having this discussion reached into her purse and pulled out two pictures and laid them on the Dr's desk. "These are my babies, and they need their mother. So, what are we going to do about that?" With those words she committed her family to a long year in the shadow of the gates of hell but saw her children grow up to be really good adults.
A man in his mid-eighties knew that treatment might give him some years of questionable quality and chose a regimen to reduce pain and let nature take its course. In my mind they both chose correctly.
